Those who guess well are called intuitive. Those who are intuitive,
however, do not believe they are guessing. — Philip Goldberg
I am never the most intuitive person in the room, but I have always been curious about intuition and have always instinctively relied on it in EVERYDAY situations. Example:
Years ago on our way to DC for a conference, I worked on a crossword puzzle while my husband drove. I hadn't even looked up in a while and had no idea where we were. Suddenly, he braked
and asked: "Stay on or get off?" I glanced up and in that glimpse saw that a traffic jam was forming in both directions, across all six lanes of the interstate. Red brake lights ahead and an exit ramp coming up on the right. "Stay on. It won't last long," I answered confidently, as I returned to my puzzle. The whole observation took 2-3 seconds. Within 5 minutes, the traffic cleared and we were soon back to full speed.
I've used this illustration many times to explain the curious nature of intuition--which is typically both SUDDEN (the intuitive LEAP) and CERTAIN (the intuitive THUD).
Why was I so certain about my answer that we should "stay on" when I hadn't been paying attention; had no idea where we were; knew nothing about the traffic patterns there; and had no sensory input beyond those 2-3 seconds of observation? I had no logical way to know the traffic jam wouldn't last long--and yet the insight was both SUDDEN and CERTAIN.
Such is the nature of intuition, which is what makes INTUITION very different from GUESSING...
I define intuition as: Knowing rapidly [the INTUITIVE LEAP],
without knowing how you know,
but knowing for a certainty [the INTUITIVE THUD],
sometimes in the face of evidence to the contrary.
Wanting to share what I had learned from my dissertation research, in 2013 I began developing
for Florida Gulf Coast University's "Renaissance Academy" a class I called "Jumpstart Your Intuition." Though I've offered it in other time frames and formats, I typically made it a 4-session, 8-hour interactive PLAYSHOP (because WORKSHOP just sounds so dreary...)
The 4-session format is optimal, because it permits adequate time for presentation, discussion, exercises and interaction during the sessions; and also allows for the "homeplay" exercises between sessions. In the sessions, we address:
Session 1: "What is intuition?"
Session 2: "How intuitive am I?"
Session 3: "How can I use intuition?"
Session 4: "How do I build my intuition?"
(See session details at right.)
The overall purpose of the class is to DEMYSTIFY INTUITION and help individuals understand it not as a mystical superpower out of reach of all except the "gifted few." Rather, it is a faculty that EVERYONE has and can access. The critical steps are recognizing, trusting, acting on and building our intuitive capacity so it can be useful to us and to others.
Because we are all unique, we all have unique ways of accessing our natural intuitive capacities. To understand and utilize our own intuition, we must learn how our intuitive insights come to us, and how to translate those insights. In short, we must become our own GURU.
Intuition is useful to us--not only as a life-affirming and potentially life-saving capacity, but also
as a guide to happiness and success. The "Jumpstart Your Intuition" class can help you realize your own intuitive capacity and find ways to make your "EVERYDAY INTUITION" useful in EVERYDAY ways.
Due to current restrictions on in-person meetings, classes are not being offered at present. However, if you would like to participate in an upcoming "Jumpstart" class, or create your own local venue for classes, click on the REGISTER FOR CLASS button at the bottom right below.
